Vertigo is the sensation of feeling off balance. For some people, vertigo makes them feel like they are on a boat and the world is rocking side to side or back and forth. Vertigo can also make a person feel like the room is spinning quickly around them. Individuals suffering from vertigo can experience nausea and/or vomiting.
There can be various causes of vertigo such as inner ear problems like Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or fluid in the inner ear, upper cervical spine subluxation, cranial bone subluxation, and migraine. Chiropractic can help with many of these causes.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a condition where tiny calcium deposits occur in the inner ear canals. The inner ear canals relate information to the brain regarding movement of the head and body to aid in balance. When there are calcium deposits shifting position in the canals it alters the body’s ability to stay balanced and vertigo results. There is a technique called the canalith repositioning procedure that can be performed to help settle the calcium deposits and reduce or relieve the vertigo.
Illness like a colds or sinus infections can cause increased fluid buildup in the inner ear. This fluid buildup can cause vertigo.
Subluxations of the cranial bones and the upper cervical vertebrae along with the corresponding muscle tension can alter nerve function to the brain and cause vertigo.
Chiropractic adjustments aid in proper cranial bone movement which can reduce sinus congestion to rid the inner ear of fluid buildup. Proper cranial bone motion also allows for healthy brain function. Adjustments and therapeutic exercise can strengthen the muscles in the neck to improve posture which can also relieve muscle tension and vertigo. A properly aligned spine promotes normal nerve function between the body and the brain can reduce or eliminate symptoms of vertigo.
